Do Yelp Reviews Help Your Google Ranking?

Restaurant owners ask this question constantly, and the confusion is understandable. You’re managing reviews on multiple platforms, trying to figure out where to focus your energy, and wondering whether the Yelp reviews you’ve been collecting actually do anything for your Google visibility.

The short answer: Yelp reviews don’t transfer to Google, and they don’t directly affect your Google star rating or review count. But that doesn’t mean they’re irrelevant to your Google ranking. The relationship is more indirect — and more interesting — than most people realize.

What Yelp reviews don’t do

Let’s start with the clear part. Yelp and Google are separate platforms with separate review ecosystems. A five-star review left on Yelp stays on Yelp. It doesn’t appear on your Google Business Profile, it doesn’t count toward your Google review total, and it doesn’t directly influence your position in Google’s local map pack.

Google’s local ranking algorithm uses reviews from Google’s own platform — not from Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook, or anywhere else. The number of Google reviews you have, how recent they are, your Google star rating, and how consistently you respond to them — these are the review signals that directly affect your Google ranking.

If you’ve been prioritizing Yelp reviews over Google reviews in hopes of improving your Google visibility, that’s worth reconsidering. Google reviews should be your primary focus.

What Yelp reviews do affect

Here’s where it gets more nuanced. Even though Yelp reviews don’t directly influence Google’s ranking algorithm, they affect your Google visibility in two meaningful indirect ways.

1. Yelp pages rank on Google

Yelp is one of the highest-authority websites on the internet. When someone searches for your restaurant by name, or searches for your cuisine type in your area, a Yelp page for your restaurant will often appear in the organic search results — sometimes on the first page, sometimes above your own website.

That Yelp page shows your star rating, your review count, and customer comments. A restaurant with 200 Yelp reviews and a 4.5 rating presents very differently in those search results than one with 12 reviews and a 3.8 rating — even if those Yelp reviews have no direct bearing on Google’s ranking algorithm.

In other words, your Yelp reviews influence what potential customers see when they find you through Google, even if they don’t influence where you appear.

2. Your Yelp listing is a citation

In local SEO, a citation is any mention of your restaurant’s name, address, and phone number on an external website. Google uses citations across the web to build confidence in your business listing. A well-maintained Yelp listing with accurate NAP information is a high-authority citation that contributes to your overall local search authority.

This is separate from the reviews themselves. A claimed Yelp listing with correct business information strengthens your Google ranking indirectly — not because of the reviews on it, but because of the consistent, authoritative citation it provides.

Where to focus your review energy

Given all of this, here’s the practical priority order for restaurant review management:

Priority 1: Google reviews

This is where to spend the majority of your effort. Google reviews directly affect your position in the local map pack — the most visible real estate in local search. Build a consistent system: a review shortlink, a QR code on receipts, a well-timed verbal ask from staff, and a response to every review within 48 hours.

The three factors Google weighs are quantity, recency, and response rate. Of these, recency is the most commonly underestimated. A steady trickle of new reviews every month is more valuable than a burst of old ones. Aim for 4–6 new Google reviews per month as a baseline target.

Priority 2: Yelp

Claim and fully optimize your Yelp listing — complete every field, upload photos, respond to existing reviews. This takes care of the citation value and ensures your Yelp page represents you well when it appears in Google search results.

For actively soliciting Yelp reviews, be careful: Yelp’s algorithm is notoriously aggressive about filtering reviews it suspects were solicited. Reviews from accounts with little activity often get filtered out, which can be discouraging. The best Yelp reviews come organically from customers who already use the platform — which is a good reason not to over-invest energy in driving Yelp reviews at the expense of Google reviews.

Priority 3: TripAdvisor and Facebook

Claim and maintain these listings for the citation value and because they appear in Google search results. Respond to reviews when they arrive. Don’t invest significant energy in actively soliciting reviews on these platforms unless your market specifically warrants it — tourist areas for TripAdvisor, highly social communities for Facebook.

What about review gating?

Some restaurant owners have tried to manage their review profile by directing unhappy customers to Yelp and happy customers to Google — essentially “gating” which customers end up where based on their likely sentiment. This practice violates Google’s review policies and, if detected, can result in penalties including removal of reviews or suspension of your listing.

The right approach is simpler and safer: ask all customers for a Google review, respond to everything professionally regardless of sentiment, and let your actual quality of service drive the results over time.

The honest answer

Do Yelp reviews help your Google ranking? Not directly. But a strong Yelp presence — claimed listing, accurate information, active responses, healthy review count — contributes to your overall local authority and affects what potential customers see when they find you through Google.

The practical takeaway: don’t ignore Yelp, but don’t confuse effort spent on Yelp reviews for effort spent on Google reviews. They’re different signals with different impacts, and your primary focus should be the platform where the direct ranking relationship is clearest.

Google reviews, optimized Google Business Profile, consistent citations — that’s the foundation. Yelp is one part of the supporting structure, not the centerpiece.
